Digital citizenship is an important component of Global Citizenship Education (GCED), which aims to form responsible, informed, and actively engaged citizens. GCED supports the achievement of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the areas of quality education, equality, and partnerships to achieve these goals.
Teachers play a key role in the implementation of the SDGs, as they lay the foundation of knowledge and skills that help students become active and responsible members of global society. Digital citizenship, as a part of GCED, provides educators with tools to integrate technology into teaching, promote digital ethics, and foster critically thinking, literate, and conscious citizens.
Maria Kabysheva, Head of the Academic Programs Development Department, participated in the 9th Global Capacity-Building Workshop on Global Citizenship Education (GCED), organized by APCEIU under the auspices of UNESCO.
Following the workshop, Maria, together with her colleague Chandan Pal Singh, a teacher at the Nazarbayev Intellectual School in Shymkent, received an invitation to participate in the Mentoring & Grant Programme, where their project was awarded a grant. Together with Chandan Pal Singh, she developed a six-week professional development program for educators in Almaty and Shymkent titled "Empowering Educators: Building Digital Citizenship in Kazakhstan's Classrooms."
The project was designed as a comprehensive response to the challenges of digitalization in Kazakhstan's educational space. The main goal was to prepare educators to foster a digital culture and safe online behavior among students.
Over the course of six weeks, participants in the program consolidated their knowledge of personal data protection, dealing with misinformation, improved their critical thinking skills, developed their ability to use artificial intelligence as a conversational partner, and created teaching materials. The program also included the study of ethical aspects of the digital space, including interactions with AI. Teachers and graduate students worked on developing educational resources using AI technologies. At the end of the course, certificates were ceremoniously awarded to the 16 participants who successfully completed the program.
The uniqueness of the project lies in its focus on training educators, ensuring a broader and longer-term impact on the educational environment. The program directly addresses local needs, equipping educators with the necessary resources to ensure the safe and conscious development of students' digital literacy.
The project was implemented with the support of APCEIU as part of the international Global Citizenship Education development program.
