As part of the Visiting Scholar program, Professor Hasan Bahar from Selçuk University held a seminar on the topic "The Divided History of Eastern and Western Turks".
During the seminar, the professor highlighted that the division of Western and Eastern Turks began in the 7th century and continues to this day. He emphasized that the division occurred not only in territorial terms but also in linguistic and ethnic characteristics. Professor Bahar identified the Western Turks as the Oghuz and the Eastern Turks as the tribal confederations that inhabited the Turkestan region.
He also pointed out that the conquests and conflicts between states throughout history contributed to today's divided historical narrative. Despite the geographical separation, the professor stressed that there are no obstacles to the cultural and linguistic unification of Western and Eastern Turkic peoples today. He cited the issue of a common alphabet as an example.
Furthermore, he noted that the spiritual connection between Western and Eastern Turkic peoples has remained intact throughout history, and he concluded the seminar with the poem "To My Brother Afar" by the Alash movement activist, poet Magzhan Zhumabayev.
