Based on international scientific relations established by the Department of Social and Humanitarian Disciplines of the Institute of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts, on February 15, 2023, within the framework of the «Eurasia Foundation (from Asia)» a lecture was held by the visiting professor of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University Myong Soon Ok on topical issues of South Korean society for first-year students.
South Korea is one of the most important strategic partners of Kazakhstan in Asia, over the cooperation period of 30 years of with which there have been significant achievements in the political, economic, cultural, and humanitarian spheres. During the lecture, Professor Myong Soon Ok analyzed the history of bilateral ties between our peoples dating back to the occupation of Japan, the World War II, and the resettlement of ethnic Koreans to Kazakhstan based on collective memory and facts from the Soviet novel about the Korean folk hero Hong Bom Do. The hero of the national liberation uprising, General Hong Bom Do, was buried in Kyzylorda and after many decades, the country's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev supported the request of former South Korean President Moon Jae-in to return the remains of the general to his historical homeland, after which in August 2021 with the participation of a South Korean delegation led by the former Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs of the Republic of Korea Hwang Ki-chul a ceremony of repatriation of the ashes was held. The lecture was also useful from the point of view of forming a sense of patriotism, a system of values, and moral guidelines of students. In turn, the professor was pleasantly surprised by our students, who throughout the lecture enthusiastically talked, boldly expressed their point of view, answered questions, and correctly entered into the discussion.
