On June 13, 2023, the Kazakh National Women's Teacher Training University, with the support of the UN Women, together with the Center for Social and Gender Studies, initiated the opening of the Gender Equality Corner in the University's Library.
The aim of this project is to actively promote the equal participation of women in all sages of life, with a focus on five priority areas of action: strengthening women's leadership and expanding their participation in society; elimination of violence against women; engaging women in the full spectrum of peace and security issues; empowering women in the economy; ensuring the central role of gender equality in the planning and budgeting of national development, and coordinate the work on promotion of gender equality in education system.
The event began with a welcome speech and the cutting of the red ribbon. The event was opened by Gulmira Qanay, the Chair of the Managing Board - Rector of Kazakh National Women’s Teacher Training University8 Maria Dotsenko, UN Women Representative in Kazakhstan; Madina Zharbusynova, Ambassador, National Consultant, UN Women in Kazakhstan; Carissa Landes, Public Diplomacy Officer, US Consulate.
After the official part of the event, a discussion took place with the participation of honored guests and the academic and student community of the university. There were honored guests in the list of participants: Vlastimil Samek, Representative of the United Nations Department of Global Communications; Margarita Uskembayeva, the President of PF «Institute of equal rights and equal opportunities of Kazakhstan», the Member of the Expert Council of the National Commission for women and family and demographic policy under the President of Kazakhstan; Latina Satarova, author of the book "Everything is okay with everyone. Skills of non-violent communication: we learn to communicate ecologically and effectively", coach/mentor (Erickson International Canada); Saltanat Kagazbekova, head of the scientific department of the Egyptian University of Islamic Culture Nur-Mubarak; as well as representatives of USAID. A seminar-training on the topic "I know gender" was also held, which was conducted by Dinara Kussain, UN Women Analyst, Communications and Advocacy.
In the framework of the project, UN Women gifted books and informational materials on the topic of gender equality and gender studies to the library of the University. This is the first project of UN Women, in cooperation with the universities of Kazakhstan, to initiate the opening of the Gender Equality Corner. In the future, it is planned to open such corners in other universities of the country.
