The workshop on Artificial intelligence in education: ChatGPT was held on April 3, 2023, for the teaching staff of the university, the Institute of Philology (Department of Foreign Language Teaching Methodology and Department of Practical Foreign Language), who desired to learn about the most recent advancements in the field of natural language processing and how it can be applied to education. In the field of artificial intelligence, the seminar was organized by the Center for Academic Writing and Language Learning and led by Marisol Richmond, a native speaker and teacher of Women’s University F.M. Myrzakhanova.
Content:The workshop began with an introduction to ChatGPT, a large language model developed by OpenAI that uses deep learning to generate responses to text input that resemble human responses. Participants were provided with an overview of how the model operates and how it can be implemented in a variety of contexts.
The remainder of the workshop was devoted to the educational applications of ChatGPT. Participants were shown examples of how the model can be used to respond to students' questions, provide feedback on their assignments, and even generate personalized learning materials. Teachers also provided guidance on integrating technology into existing curricula and ensuring that students receive accurate and useful responses.
Moreover, during the workshop's practical portion, participants gained hands-on experience with ChatGPT. They were able to ask questions and receive answers in real time, demonstrating the power and potential of the technology. Instructors were present to provide advice and answer any questions that arose during practice.
The discussion of the future of ChatGPT and natural language processing in education concluded the workshop. Participants were urged to continue researching the technology and to discuss their findings with coworkers.
The ChatGPT workshop for university instructors has become a valuable opportunity for instructors to learn about the most recent advancements in the field of natural language processing and how they can be applied to education. Participants received an overview of the technology, hands-on experience with ChatGPT, and suggestions for incorporating the technology into their training. The workshop was a resounding success and will inspire teachers to investigate the potential of ChatGPT and other natural language processing technologies for their own work.
And most importantly, the faculty of the Institute of Philology agreed to participate in a small study in which they will be asked to share their opinions and comments regarding how and why their students will utilize this platform. Instructors Marisol Richmond and Myrzakhanova F.M. will collect data on this topic and present their findings as a poster presentation on May 18-19 at KIMEP during the Central Asian Conference on Languages and Education (CALE)
